My new MBP sometimes makes a noise when I wake it from sleep. Its similar to the noise when you insert a disk.

Besides that, the drive functions perfectly fine. I was just wondering if the noise is normal

Any Apple notebook that I've owned with an optical drive did this, it was loudish and scary but it was normal. For it to be silent seems to be abnormal.

Hmmm weird. I was just wondering, because my old 2009 MBP didn't have this issue. I also heard there was an update for this issue, but unfortunately the update won't work on the new models.

It was an EFI update. It had different effects on different models too. My old late 08 unibody stopped making the noise when waking from sleep, but still made the noise on boot. My roommate's 09 stopped making the noise altogether. In all honesty, I suggest just doing an optibay mod, since the Superdrive that MBPs ship with suck anyway. They are firmware limited in speed. I got an external "LiteOn" DVD drive, and it reads/burns twice as fast.

I've heard of this b4, and correct me if I'm wrong, but this is normal. My MBP does that too. I don't think its anything to worry about.

My 2011 does it on shutdown and boot up.

My 2010 did NOT do all this, or maybe I didn't hear it because it wasn't so damn loud.
