Hey.

I've just bought a used Retina Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (2.6GHz Intel Core i7). It is immaculate apart from an occasional screen flickering problem. It's quite hard to describe but I've attached a video. I can't figure out what conditions make it happen, but it is very occasional. I've done a fresh install, with a dual boot of El Capitan, & Mojave and it happens on both.

I'm wondering if anyone has any insights?

I'm currently experimenting with the Automatic Graphics Switching Toggle

Cheers

Could be a loose video cable or connection. Common problem with notebook computers because of the opening and closing of the lid. Good way to check is to attach another monitor to your MBP to see if the same thing is happening.

The repair site www.ifixit.com has instructions on how to open the machine up and allow you to check the video cables. They also sell the tools needed to work on the machine. If it turns out to be a bad video cable (LVDS cable) the ifixit site sells them.

It doesn't happen on an external screen. I've had it happen on the laptop screen whilst connected by Thunderbolt to an external screen which was unaffected.

But it if was the cable or connection wouldn't it happen as you moved the lid, as opposed to randomly when the lid is static? Having said that closing the lid, and reopening it does seem to stop the flickering

If it doesn't happen on an external screen, then the problem is likely with the video cable. Video to an external monitor does not depend on that cable. Follow thru with what I recommended above.
