Hi guys,

On a beautiful sunny day after a cup of coffee I opened up my laptop and found the screen was bright white with a gray halo around the edges. I rebooted the machine but now the screen is black however the laptop works fine when using my external monitors below are the sequence of events.

1) Bight white screen with gray halo on edges
2) Rebooted and now the screen is black by laptop works on external monitor
3) When I select displays in system preference it does not identify the 'internal' monitor
4) I have tried all software restarts but the issue is definitely on a hardware component
5) Repair shops are telling me to be prepared to pay 500 euros to fix

I called a few repair shops and they are telling me it will be 5 weeks + to get my laptop back. I use it everyday for work and sometimes I need to travel which is where the problem lays.

Im an engineer and scientist however not electrical or computing. I do however know how to use a multimeter.

What would you guys recommend me to do? I would love to know the problem and source the fix myself and have a good go at it as I cant afford to just buy a new laptop because of this....

Thanks

Gustavo

I believe there is a chronic issue with the displays on the earlier retina's, don't know if Apple has acknowledged it but Louis Rossman has noted it multiple times. Maybe he can tell you about the issue if you ask him from the website, or check out his youtube videos. Sorry about the issue, hope it gets resolved easily.

If sys prefs doesn't show the monitor, I'd suspect the cable connecting it to the main boatd, or logic board, or whatever it's called. Open it up, check youtube / ifixit videos, and trace the cabling.

I also have a (late) 2013 retina MBP with a smashed screen. However, mine is properly smashed :) Cracked. Display still shows, as expected, in sys prefs and the machine will boot to it if given the chance.

Thanks! I will try that, from watching youtube videos it seems like the problem may well be a blown LCD fuse?

Will look up more videos
