I've been noticing that my performance with a 4k monitor plugged in is noticeably slower.

I have lots of scripts and servers running for building web apps, and they really slow down when I have my 4k monitor plugged in, especially if I have my resolution to have "more space".

I'm wondering if anyone here knows where the real bottleneck is. My MBP isn't a powerhouse by any means, but capable:

* 2GHz Core i5
* 16GB of Ram
* 256GB SSD
* Intel Iris Graphics 540 1536 MB

Does anyone know if this is a CPU constraint or a GPU constraint?

Will an eGPU help? I recognize that an Intel Iris 540 isn't really a great piece of graphics hardware, but is the performance of this GPU with 1.5 GB of VRAM really the constraint here?

An eGPU setup can run me $400+, but a MBP with great specs can run me upwards of $3000. Wondering where to spend the money.

Arthur.
