So my new 15 inch 2017 MBP just made the scariest, loudest screeching noise ever. I'm not sure what it was. It's almost like the noises you hear in a factory where metals are being cut. I couldn't record a video because I was just freakin out and shut it down right away (now it's fine). My speakers are still working fine now thankfully. Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Some notable things that I did before it happened:

  1. Played a video on IINA app (VLC replacement) about an hour.

  2. Had an apple earphone plugged in while watching it. Noise happened right after i unplug, and tried to play a youtube video while raising the volume from 0.
If anyone ever experienced, or knew anything about this, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi,

Hopefully your speaker still works. I've purchased my MacBook 15" 2017 back in June 2017, so far I've had 4 repairs and one complete replacement with a new MacBook just this month. Reasons for repair range from touchid issues, speakers distortion or dead on either left or right, keyboard stuck or not responding or double key response and stuck pixels. I've owned numerous MacBooks and this is the first time I've had so many repairs... My next laptop is either a 2015 MacBook Pro or a new keyboard designed MacBook.

Anyway the Genius Specialist told me he has had a few customers with the speaker issue and this happened using the VLC or IINA app. Something about scrubbing back and forth in playback and overloading the speaker? Happened to me with the iina app. They will keep replacing the speaker for you until the warranty is up like me and I hope you get AppleCare like I did or expect to pay 500~700 for a keyboard or speaker repair after one year is up. They replace the entire top case for one small issue which is why the repairs are so expensive. I expect the speaker or keyboard to act up.... and avoid vlc or iina if you can... and I repeat get AppleCare or sell it before the warranty is up.
