I'm trying to set up an external monitor to my Mac Book Pro 2017. There are Thunderbolt 3 ports. I have one adapter (Thunderbolt/USB (brand Apple) and a second one attached to it (USB to VGA (brand insignia)). I'm trying to connect to either 2009 Lenovo or 2009 Dell monitor. I am unable to get my screen to display on the monitors.

I have went to "Display" and held the "option" button and "detect displays" does appear, however nothing is displaying on the external monitor. Can someone please help?
Is it the insignia adapter?
Do I need to have one adapter (thunderbolt3/VGA)?

I'm not completely clear on the type of adaptors you're using.
Could you post links or pictures?

And your monitors need VGA input, is that correct?
