Hi all,
Just wanted to share my experience of diagnosing a screen flickering issue with my unit.
Up till now it's been apart from the occasional sticky key it's been absolutely rock solid but all of a sudden it started flickering every few seconds.
Here are a few of my diagnosis steps
- Tried shutting down unnedded apps / removed Firefox / Chromium
- PRAM reset
- SMC reset
- Did a fresh Mojave install
- Did a rollback to High Sieraa using Cmd, Shift Option
Weird thing is
- In safe mode it was fine
- In recover mode it was fine
- Did a hardware test and it was fine.
- The screen flickering seems to stop when there is an external monitor attached - disconnect and it starts flickering again....
X So I was able to establish that it was not the standard wonky cache
X It was definitely not due to Mojave or any of the recent updates
I should note that my Macbook has Moshi screen protector on it, keyboard cover and is kept inside a hard shell cover at all times for impact protection (again Moshi). No water damange - I NEVER have drinks near it and no impact over and above normal usage eg it's not been deliberately dropped or anything heavy placed on it. The most action it's seen is being put in and out of a shoulder bag when goin out and about and apart from that it never travels more than desk to bed and back again - literallly 2 metres apart.
Overall conclusion - it's definitely not a software issue as I've tried 2 different versions of Mac OS X and to the best of my knowledge / ability it's not accidental damage. The fact that it works fine in recovery mode / safe mode and the hardware test is OK suggests it might be something to do with the light sensor maybe in the lid? Faulty display maybe ?
Anyways I've got my Time Machine backup and a courier is booked for tomorrow to come and pick it up. (I live a domestic flight away from my nearest Apple store)
