Can I use my 17" MBP and a 27" ACD at the same time? Also can you have spaces on the MBP and the ACD at the same time? I have 9 spaces on my MBP currently, can I have 9 more spaces on the ACD? or is the ACD just another screen for displaying a program of your choice?

Looking to get an ACD soon so just wondering what its capable of. What cable do you need to connect them, a special thunderbolt one?

Yes you can use both screens at the same time. You get a max of 16 paired spaces (one space counts for both the display and the laptop). The display acts as an extension of your screen i.e. you won't have separate menubars/docks...unless you're mirroring.
