Hey guys,
I've been having problems on my MacBook Pro 5,1 since June/July of 2009. Every time I boot, I seem to be stalling on the grey screen. The Apple logo doesn't even show up. And if it does show up, a majority of the time it would just throw itself back to another boot.
Resetting PRAM doesn't work at all, since well, it doesn't put itself to a reboot. No matter how long I tried holding it.
Here's a bit of info on my machine:

I believe I have the latest version of the Firmware, which I think is 1.8. I don't know what's causing these boot issues.
I've tried different ideas to see if I could identify the source of the problem, but I'm kind of stuck.
0) Resetting PMU, I've done this way too many times
1) Removed HDD, boot as normal, see if I could reset PRAM, nothing. The laptop won't even reboot after holding cmd-opt-p-r.
3) Booted into Snow Leopard install disc, this sorta worked, but took ages (20 mins?). I tried fixing all of the disk errors and permission errors. Disk Utility confirmed that it was fixed. But upon rebooting, same issue persists.
I'm running out of ideas. Would downgrading back to firmware 1.6 do anything?
