I was using my MacBook Pro with lion earlier today and the screen started flashing white and a bar would appear on the left side. I’m not sure what was causing it, but after I rebooted into leopard I noticed the issue was gone. I’m a little worried it may be my graphics card failing but I am unsure how to check at the moment. I managed to snap a picture while the issue was happening.

I’ve upgraded the machine myself to a larger HD and 5GB of ram. I use leopard for everything mostly and just use Lion for browsing the web.

The 5,5 had really bad graphical glitches on the 9400M when it came back. IIRC from someone else who had a 5,5 with graphical bugs, it was a software issue that went away after a few releases of OS X. Since you're running the OS that would of had those issues back in the day, I'd try Mavericks if you prefer the old interface or you can try El Cap or dosdude1 for newer releases.

I’ve been running Leopard all day with no issue so I’m honestly glad it’s a software issue. I was so worried the GPU was going bad.
