I had 300 GB of movies on my MB. Yesterday I got an external HDD and put all my movies on that and deleted them from my MB. Now when I check the "Storage" of my MB rather than 300 GB being taken up by movies it's taken up by Backup. How long do these "Backups" stay.

What you are seeing is local backups created by Time Machine. It keeps a local copy of backups when your Time Machine destination is not available. You can ignore it and OS X will manage the space on its own. If you need the space the OS will shrink the space. If it is bothering you, just turn Time Machine off then back on and the space will be zeroed out.

Just remember to turn it back on if you want continuous backups. Man, it's easy to forget when you turn that slider off.
