I have the 2016 MacBook Pro, and as I can see I have AppleCare support until the middle of November.
The keyboard have been in service with Apple due to sticky keys, but due to the continue keyboard failure, I am worried about if the support will go through the end of AppleCare with a free reperation if the keyboard turns bad again.

What opportunities does the AppleCare for a year really gives and is it recommended to buy it for at least 3 more years?

Yes, apart from KB issues as with the new MBP and rMB it's likely any repair bill would be nearly double of previous gens simple from the construction method used now ie glue and soldered on, non reusable parts
