I recently downloaded Corel Painter 3x for a thirty day trial onto my MacBook Pro (2011), running Snow Leopared 10.6.8, 2GHz intel Core i7 processor. When using this application, my computers fan and/or hard drive suddenly becomes very loud then go quiet and then become loud again. Is this a sign of impending doom for my hard drive, or can I just ignore it?

It's perfectly normal. I'd be worried if the fans didn't get loud at all.

The temps increased to a point where the fans started ramping up to cool the MBP.

If you want to see what your temperatures are, you can use an application like iStat Menus
