Hi guys.

I was wondering if there is a way to use the external display in full screen mode and use my MBP screen as well.

Im trying to watch a movie in full screen on my external dis and still use my MBP screen for Safari, etc.
When I use full screen for movies, my MBP display also goes black and gives me no usage.

I saw a thread back in 2008 but since its been 5 years, Im wondering if there is a solution.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE:

I tried on 3 monitor/TVs.
Sony Bravia, LG E2370V, and even on Apple TBD.

So far non of them work and hoping to see some solutions soon.

Well, that problem comes from the OS. Since Lion, using multiple displays is kind of annoying. I'm also very annoyed but this. Something so simple can not be done.
Just use vlc, which does not use ML's native fullscreen mode. That should do it until apple comes up with a solution.

I have the VLC open in the other monitor and soon as I hit full screen, Macs screen goes black...

You need to disable "Black Screens in Full Screen mode" in Vlc's preferences. That should do the trick.

one of the many downgrades in Lion/ML, unfortunately

Multiple screens work perfectly in Snow Leopard (10.6), but was ruined in M/ML.
Altering prefs in VLC should do the trick; but t is a shame on apple that usability has taken a hit on so many levels in the latest versions of OS X.

VLC can do anything.

I have my projector connected to my Mac Pro and run VLC on it as a second monitor and work on the side with no issues whatsoever :D

Also you can switch audio devices easily through VLC and screens as well.
