If I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro and close the lid to the MBP, does the computer still go to sleep?

I am thinking about using an external monitor and then keyboard and mouse. I know of other notebooks that do not sleep when external monitor is connected and the lid is close.

Any info is much appreciated. Thanks.

It will initially go to sleep, and then you can re wake it with the space bar, and it will awake, with the lid still closed and displaying only on the external monitor..

I usually turn it on and quickly close it. The reason being is if you want to use the full 2560x1600 res, if your monitor supports it, you gotta.
