Macbook Pro and External Monitor

How can I watch a movie on my external monitor in full screen and still work on my Macbook Pro? Every time I go back to work on my Macbook I lose the full screen viewing on my external monitor. Any advice?

Are you watching a YouTube video? DVD? VLC? What are you using? What you describe is not normal behavior.

I am watching video streams from online.... Megavideo, hulu

Also just tried a dvd and again same problem....
