I have a late 2016 Macbook Pro (non touch bar) that I use with the LG UltraFine 4K monitor. I absolutely love this setup - for the most part it works perfectly, but one thing I have noticed is that the MacBook tends to get quite hot rather quickly when I'm using it (especially with the lid closed). In addition, sometimes it even feels slightly warm when I aren't using the computer and it's in sleep mode plugged into the monitor for charging. Is this normal?

yes, your mac won't be damaged by heat, if the temperature is too high it will automatically shut off, so if the computer doesn't randomly turn itself off during operation, you have nothing to worry about.
