My son wants to build his own PC gaming machine. He's already purchased the main components. We're currently sharing my 2011 27" i7 iMac. He's using windoze 7 via bootcamp for his gaming. I'm not a fan of windoze so I'm going to sell my iMac and get a MacBook Pro.

My question is, how can my (future) MBP and his PC use the same peripherals. Which is gonna be the keyboard, monitor and mouse. I'm thinking of just keeping my MBP in one of those vertical Hengedocks.

I've done this before with a macbook air and a desktop PC that I needed to use for work. I used a USB switch + hub for the keyboard and mouse. I took advantage of the fact that most monitors have more than one output so I used one set of outputs (DP) for the desktop and another set (HDMI) for the macbook air.

I had my macbook air set up on a shelf so it could sit open and act as a third screen with space for stuff to be used underneath it. I originally got one of those docks that holds the computer closed but realized that there are enough situations where I need to temporarily use the built in keyboard/trackpad - because macOS was being screwy etc. that it was better to have the laptop open.

This is the usb switch I got: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-One-Button-Swapping-Between-Computers/dp/B006Z0Q2SI

My set up worked pretty well until I quit the job that required the desktop (windows) pc and then I was back to one computer :)

That's the type of setup I was thinking of having. Having the MBP closed and using the peripherals for both machines. Which macOS were you using at the time? I plan on getting a 2012 MBP. So that I can use both the SSD's that I have in my iMac.

Will this switch prevent from the other machine being moved? For example, if I use the mouse and keyboard, it won't affect the PC or vice versa, right?
