So today my dad got one of the newer macbook pros and gave me his old one. Before he gave it to me, he started up his old macbook in firewire mode, transferred his files to his new macbook then wiped the whole HD.

Now whenever I try to start up the old macbook with the os x startup disk (or any disk) I just get a gray screen no matter what. I get a chyme but no apple logo or starting wheel. I've tried literally everything - resetting the PRAM, taking out the battery, etc..but nothing works. If I hold down option, I get a cursor and a cd icon, click the arrow to boot from it, but then the computer just restarts and goes back to a gray screen.

I then reconnected the old macbook to the new macbook as a target disk and ran disk utilities. Disk utilities says the old macbook's HD is fine and nothing is wrong with it. Now whenever I start up the old macbook, I still get the gray screen and it reboots itself every 15-20 seconds or so. Rarely it will give me a flashing question mark error. Any ideas what I can do before I go to the Apple Store?
