This only happens occasionally, but sometimes when I have my speakers plugged into my 2010 macbook pro, the sound just dies. If I unplug the speakers the sound comes through the built in speakers, but the only way for me to get the jack to work again is by restarting my computer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a hardware or a software issue?

Next time it happens, blow into the headphone jack with compressed air. This same thing happened to me and it was because dust was doing something to the sensor in there. After blowing the plug out it worked just fine.

Don't waste your time and energy calling Apple until you've tried this.
