So I recently purchased a new macbook pro with these specs.
2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400
15" HR Glossy WS Display

I manually installed 8GB of RAM myself, which seems to work fine.
Even with just basic web browsing etc, I only seem to get around 4 hours of life from it. 2-3 hours watching video. Automated graphics switching is on. I have calibrated the battery, so i'm not sure if this is normal.
Is it? Thanks.

There are many factors that impact your battery life. See the BATTERY LIFE FROM A CHARGE section of the following link for details.

This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

The built-in batteries in the newer Mac unibody notebooks come pre-calibrated and do not require regular calibration like the removable batteries.
