Having a strange problem with my macbook pro battery (bought in 2009, trying to keep it alive).

The battery will fully charge, but as soon as I disconnect the cord from the computer, it immediately shuts off no matter what percentage it is charged to. Earlier today, I unplugged the charger from the wall first (the cord was still plugged into my macbook) and my macbook did not shut off. What could be causing this?

What is the condition of your battery?
Go to your System Information/Power tab. You will find that app in your Applications/Utilities folder.
What is showing for Charge Cycles, and full charge capacity?
There should also be some information about battery health. If you have the original battery, it will likely say "Service Soon", or something similar.
And, if it really is the original battery, it has served you well, and time to retire/replace that battery. Good luck finding a replacement that is worth buying.

How long did you wait for the computer to die after pulling the charger out of the wall? The charger has capacitance which can hold the output voltages up for a period of time, making the computer not die instantly. Try your test again, but this time, leave the charger unplugged from the wall for a few minutes... I bet your computer dies.

If you want to resolve the issue, replace your battery.
