So, my Macbook pro's battery life is circling the drain, and i'm only getting 180 minutes on a full charge and not to mention an ominous warning to service the battery. Health is about 70%

So i think i better replace it. I've found a few sites offering new batteries cheap as £30-40, though if anyone has a recommendation of a UK based parts supplier that would be welcome. Performing the replacement isn't a concern since i can do it myself.

But my biggest concern is disposal, and unlike other computer manufacturers Apple don't exactly have a disposal program, plus i'm unsure if local refuse sites would accept the battery.

Any advise?

I would never trust or recommend a battery that didn't come from Apple, since there have been too many reports of problems with knockoff batteries.

From the MacBook Pro User Guide:
Dispose of used batteries promptly according to your local environmental guidelines.

This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

Many electronics stores will recycle batteries. In the US, I think they are required to if they sell rechargeable batteries.
