When taking a MacBook Pro in for a battery service at Apple, is it something that they will do there and then? Or do they make you come back another day?

If it’s there and then, any idea how long it takes?

Trying to plan my day, as it’s not easy to get to the Apple store for me.

From what I've been told, it depends on capacity and parts availability. You might want to try to get connected to the local Apple Store you are going to, as while they probably can't promise the time, they can probably tell if it is definitely going to take more than a day or two. In my case, mail repair for battery replacement was much, much faster (less than 72 hours including shipping) than what the local Apple Authorized Service Provider was running at the time (5+ business days).

Can’t get through to the store. They know what it’s booked in for, via the support app.

Make the trip to the store.
If they don't have the ability to fix it then and there, they'll send it out.
IF they have to send it out, it will be returned to you by mail.

Nothing complicated about it.
You have to do, what you have to do, to get it fixed...
