The times quoted by Apple will be with the MacBook running with minimum requirement i.e. wifi off, no bluetooth, etc! i only have essential programs running on mine, the screen brightness reduced and the keyboard light down to 50% the battery performance increases greatly!

With you only getting it yesterday the battery will get better once it is conditioned when it has had a few cycles of charge and discharge

Also try resetting the SMC & PRAM settings! see the Apple links below it is always good to follow these if you ever have performance issues!

RESET SMC LINK

RESET PRAM SETTINGS

Hope this helps :)

it's rated 8-9 hours but that's with everything practically on low

flash videos and sites displaying flash content will drain your battery life more quickly

won't get 8-9 hours with the screen at 100%

My Screen is at like 70% So far ive been using my MBP for 3 straight hours and its a 49% which is amazing

Normal I Run:

Safari - Youtube FaceBook Twitter and a few other random sites
MSN - Video Calling and Regular Chatting
iTunes - Stream podcast or listen to my Music
Mail - Check my mail once a day

I use Photobooth and Garageband less frequent

Have a look at Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.

image below uses sorting by CPU as an example
