This is a very odd thread, I know, but I've been curious about this for years. It appears to me when I look at photographs online, that the 2007 and 2008 15" MBPs have a different bottom bezel than the 2006 models. It almost appears to be thicker, because there's more aluminum above and below the MacBook Pro branding. When I look online at the dimensions it doesn't appear they got any deeper so I don't know what the difference is...

It could be that the font is smaller so it takes up less room, it could even be possible that it doesn't have the 'glossy' text that the 2006 ones do and that explains the difference? This has been bugging me in a really odd way (mostly because I'm shopping to buy one of these) and I'm curious. This doesn't seem to be the case with the 17" version. If anyone knows what the difference really is if there is any let me know. If someone has both a 2006 and 2007 15" and can take a side-by-side I'd appreciate it.

Seems I found the difference, there is certainly a change. If you look up near the iSight, the bezel space between the camera and the screen is reduced, so it looks like they retain the same depth but they just shrunk the top bezel and increased the bottom bezel to fit it in the same shell. Not sure why they made this change but it definitely is. I suppose the swap is not as easy as I thought...
