Macbook Pro black screen on bootup

I have a macbook pro retina display mid 2012 model. When i boot up i hear a chime bot screen is blank. I wait a few min to allow it to finish booting up with black screen. I close the mac book for a few minutes to let it fall asleep. When i open it , screen works and im on login screen. Anyone have any solutions???

PRAM reset and SMC reset
google for instructions, or re-install OS X

PRAM reset and SMC reset did not work. I found that if i press the "s" key while the screen is black during start up, than hard boot, it will than boot normally only for the next time it boots up. Have not tried a clean install
