Macbook Pro & Dell U2711 - HDMI not working?

I have a new Macbook Pro connected to a Dell U2711 by HDMI and it simply doesn't work. I know there's no problem with my MBP, or the cables, as I took them into a shop and tried them with another monitor and it worked.
The Dell doesn't recognise that the MBP is connected. I know the monitor works as I have had it connected to my pc via DVI. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try going Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort. I bought one from a guy who explained that he tried going from DisplayPort to HDMI and it didnt work. Same thing with DVI-
