Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro that was just out of the year warranty and the display failed. Horizontal lines and eventually turning green.

Took it to my local Genius Bar who said it was an internal electronic issue and they'd repair under consumer law.

Once with Apple Repair they claimed they wouldn't repair because of water damage, and wanted £1400. It's never had any water damage at all or taken into or anywhere near a humid environment.

has anyone else experience this? My only red flag was that it was an official Apple Refurb so could only assume it had this water damage before I bought it.

Apple use a seal/tab that detects moisture over time, so "water damage" can simply mean that it's been used in a slightly humid environment (not unusual in the UK - I keep my home to about 45%-50% humidity but I wouldn't be surprised at 70%+ in some homes/offices). I've heard of others who've had the seal show "moisture damage" without significant exposure, and very often there is no real damage to the electronics. I'd be surprised if they'd send a refurb unit that hadn't had the seal checked/replaced and moisture absorbent in the packaging (though it is possible).

If it's being repaired under UK consumer law, just stick to your (honest) position that the machine has not to your knowledge been exposed to any moisture other than normal atmospheric humidity whilst in your ownership. I'm pretty sure consumer groups (eg Which? Magazine) or the small claims court would back you up on this! Basically, if the device is so susceptible to moisture damage that it can't be used in normal UK conditions, then they have admitted that it is unfit for purpose!

(As an aside, I've had to use devices briefly in the rain for work reasons and they've worked fine afterwards; my only problem was with a cup of coffee that was ingested by the cooling fan on my MacBook Air - blew the SSD chips. On the positive side, my backups worked perfectly, and I got a new and better laptop :))
