I have a 2007 MBP3,1 A1226 15.4" LED on OSX Lion, Snow and Windows 7.
While watching a HD movie on an Epson projector the picture went blank and the laptop was overheated.
Pressing F7 did not recover the picture internally or externally, so I forced shutdown until the laptop was cooled down.
Later when I turned it on the internal display was OK for a while and then it started flashing until it died.
Connecting an external monitor was the only working solution.

I tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM no luck.
The test with the torch behind the apple logo shows no faint image.

External monitors work, but since the internal display died:
a. there is no monitor detection so I have to select a predefined resolution
b. it works only with DVI-I cable, and not with DVI-D anymore.

Can you figure out what needs to be replaced:
1. LCD panel
2. LED driver board
3. Logic board
4. Repair the graphics card

Any suggestions?

Based on the detail that both internal and external video went out initially, I'm inclined to think it's the logic board issue common amongst the 2.2/2.4GHz models of 2007. I wouldn't expect external video to work at all, so that's a little strange. Anything at all related to the internal display would not have caused issues with the external.
