Yesterday I flipped open my laptop to discover a black, vertical bar on the right side of my screen. My macbook is a mid 2014 15-inch retina display, and has had no previous damage to it. Can anyone help?

It looks like hardware damage to the retina screen.
Could it also be the connection from the motherboard to the display? When I open and close the laptop the black bar expands and then condenses, and if i press on the screen, the only part that does the same thing is if i press on the bottom right corner.

Well I can't see any obvious sigbns of damage, it's within warranty take it to apple and get them to fix it.

Its possible, but either way, its hardware damage/failure. You need to take it into Apple and have them fix it, though hopefully they'll say its warrantied.
