Macbook Pro Display

Hi folks,
I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro that will chime at startup, flash a white screen, then immediately turn black. The laptop will display on a external display and will even display on occasion on the mbp's native display.

I have reset the SMC, PRAM, and even changed some settings in the sleep options or preferences menu. Any suggestions? I am running out of ideas!

- Are we to understand this to mean that the machine is functioning properly, but only on an external display?

The periodic issues with the built-in display would suggest a failed or loose internal display cable.
