Macbook Pro Dying After 10.6 Update Everytime

I have this Macbook Pro I bought in 2009 and it gets stuck at the apple logo white screen with the rotating gear after everytime I try to do a Software Update to the most recent updates. I end up having to Erase and Install the OS just so that I can use the computer.

Does anyone know a fix to this problem?
