New MBP here. Could someone explain what the EFI Firmware Update does? Do I need to do it? I haven't run it because I'm about to hand this computer off to my Dad who is about to go on a business trip and I don't want foul anything up right now.

i apologize as i do not have an answer for you..
however, the thread title is very misleading as i clicked it because i thought that there was some new update released that i should be performing on my macbook pro.
EFI is basically the BIOS. It's fine to update, just make sure it's plugged in and don't interrupt the update.
