I am going to buy a used MacBook Pro (only for a dev computer), and it has 2 problems: The startup screen is white with a folder and question mark, and the bottom plate is missing screws. I mainly need help with the startup, but a link to somewhere I could buy screws would be great too. It has a hard drive in it. Do I just need to reinstall OSX? HELP ME!

Let's say that I can't fix it that way. Can I do a clean install of OSX or can I install Windows without being in OSX?

I don't know. Maybe it won't work. The warranty on the machine expired. I just wanted to know if I can still use it if it doesn't work.

Just follow the instructions in the links I posted. They have nothing to do with warranty issues. Try it before you do a clean install.

Okay. I don't have the machine yet. It is shipping. I probably want to clean install it anyway because it is used, but I'll try the links. I will have it next week.

When you get it, post again if you need more help... or if you have success! What version of Mac OS X is installed? Be sure you get the grey install discs that came with that computer, if it came with Snow Leopard.

Unibody Macbook Pro 13" Bottom case replacement screws?

Screws for Bottom

Do you know where I can get screws for the bottom of the Mac? I have the model number now too: A1278.

Sorry. I didn't read that far down!

Do you know which ones close the bottom cover?
