MacBook pro + Ext HDD + PS3?

Is it possible to transfer files/videos from my MacBook onto an external HDD and then connect the HDD via USB to my PS3 to view films?

Am I right in thinking that the PS3 requires the extenal HDD to be Fat32? If so, am I right in thinking Fat32 isnt compatible with the mac?

FAT32 is indeed compatible with your Mac.

So if i first format the hdd to Fat32 then both my mac & ps3 will read it?

That is correct. Put a folder named 'VIDEO' at the root of the drive and move your videos into it (not 100% necessary, but the PS3 won't automatically detect and display the videos unless they're in that folder).

Sorry, but what do you mean by root? Do you mean just create a folder called VIDEO on the HDD?


My HDD was formatted via my previous microsoft windows laptop to NTSF, and all the original videos and photos are still stored on the old laptop.

When connecting the HDD to this old laptop to reformat it, I only get the option of NTSF or exFAT.

Will exFAT allow me to use the HDD on my PS3? Would my MacBook then be able to view its content?

Well after weeks and weeks of problems getting my PS3 Slim to recognise my WD 1TB My Passport ext HDD, ive finally succeeded.

It transpires that the PS3 Slim USB ports dont provide enough power to power an ext HDD like mine. So Ive purchased a powered USB Hub and now everything works perfectly.
