MacBook Pro External Hard Drive Problem

I just got an external hard drive for Christmas and just in time I ripped a dvd and all my memory of my 250 GB MBP is gone. I have ripped the DVDs using Handbrake and kept the file as well as transfer it to iTunes. Having two copies of each movie and over 65 quickly used up my memory. Now I want to transfer the files so that each copy rests soley on the external hard drive and I can transfer them back if I want to watch them. The problem I run into is when I transfer the movies from iTunes it only copies them and the extra data remain on my MBP HD and on my separate EHD. I was wondering if there was a way to just cut and paste the files onto the External Drive so that I can continue ripping movies and still have storage space on my computer.
