Hi. I have a MBP 2020 i5 with 8GB memory running Monterey 12.6.7. I have it connected to a LG 27'' 4k monitor most of the time.
For my job, I run Parallels Desktop with Windows 10 for some translation software. As soon as I use both the external display and Parallels Desktop with Windows 10, the Macbook becomes terribly slow and the fan spins up a lot. I also get frequent kernel panics when connecting and disconnecting the external monitor, or just randomly.
If I use the MBP without the monitor or without the virtual machine, it's usually fine.
I've noticed that setting it to 2560x1440 low resolution seems to be the only solution to get the fans to stop spinning and speed the laptop up. Even native resolutions don't seem to do better than this one, strangely enough. The low res 3840x2160 is native according to BetterDisplay but seems very sharp compared to 2560x1440 low res, and does spin my fans up a lot. So does 1920x1080 high res.
Are there any solutions for this or should I just accept my Macbook Pro is not capable or running a 4k monitor in high resolution as well as a virtual machine?
