my girl has a macbook pro 15inch. the previous version... not the newest one. over the last few months it has been shutting itself off automatically, i guess due to it overheating..... so ive taken it apart because i thought it might be clogged up with dust (even tho theres no exhuast or intake openings).

it seems that the left fan doesnt freely spin when nudged. i havent taken it out but i guess its dead, right?

i have tried to source a replacement but not sure where to start to find a reliable reseller. ive contacted the local authorised Apple Service centre and they seem to charge more than necessary as the warranty has recently expired and it seems that ive sourced the problem and are not willing to sell me the part.

has any1 come across the left fan failing issue? google seems to think its a widespread issue.

can any1 recommend a reputable seller in the UK?

Thanks in advance

If it's 100% out of warranty, make sure you know exactly which revision she has then source the fan off ebay. If you don't get the right revision, you could end up with a fan with a mildly different connector (if my memory serves me correctly).

thanks guys

i did look on ebay but i was trying to avoid ebay really

ebay UK only has 'used' ones so its more likely that they will pack up on her again?

anyhow 35 quid for a used...wee little macbook fan is quite pricey IMHO. my CPU cooler which looks more intricate and costly costs that much i think!!!
