My previous macbook pro died with a logic board failure, the office sent me a replacement, a slightly older 2.16 Core 2 Duo. My previous pro was quiet, I almost never heard the fan unless I was doing something really really heavy.
On this replacement, the fan ramps up to high speeds off and on for no apparent reason. Currently the fans are running at 6,000 RPM. The CPU temp is at 133 degrees F. The CPU load is 4%.
I see this frequently. I can let it sit, not touching it, a few apps running but not using it. Over the course of a few hours the fans will ramp up to 6,000 RPMs and stay there for quite a long time (half hour, an hour, sometimes more) and then randomly come back down. When this happens the temps seem fine, the load is low, activity monitor shows nothing using up a lot of CPU.
I've tried resetting the PRAM and SMC with no effect. This machine as far as I can find is a Late 2006 model, so I removed the battery and unplugged it, and held down the power button for 5 seconds. No improvement. It does have a 7200 RPM hard drive installed, however the previous one had the same drive in it and did not have this problem, plus monitoring the fan speed indicates it's definitely the fans that are the noise, and the guy who had this machine before also said the fans always ran like crazy.
Any ideas?
