Hi all,
Have searched extensively, most of the night in fact, but have yet to see the exact situation I've encountered.
The superdrive on my old (now my mums) 1.83GHz Core Duo Macbook Pro (revision A) broke, and through searching threads, we found the only way to disable it - it kept making a really annoying noise - was to physically open the case and disconnect the cable.
I did this, and it worked. However, I've now two issues. Firstly, the fans; they idle at around 1000rpm when the computer is first booted; open up safari and they climb right up to 4000, and will hit 6000 at the first sign of youtube. This didn't happen before. I've posted iStat temperatures below that, to me, indicate something wrong with the fans.
The computer has been idle for 15 mins prior to posting these:
Left fan: 2078
Right fan: 2079
HD: 35deg
CPU: 48
Ambient: 23
Enc base: 35
GPU: 46
GPU h/sink: 50
H/sink A: 35
H/sink B: 36
Browsing to macrumors following these readings has raised the fans to 3000rpm, despite Safari being open while taking them. Actually, make that 3400 since writing that last sentence. Anyway, you get it - it's crazy.
I can't run the hardware test because the superdrive was broke to begin with - I don't *think* I accidentally lifted off a cable, but could anybody advise me which ones to check? I left the cable connecting the superdrive disconnected - is that OK? Or does that include a temperature sensor that's now all screwy?
Issue 2 is that the keyboard backlighting has stopped working, despite everything else being fine with the keyboard and trackpad... any ideas?
Apologies for the length of post, and I'd really appreciate any help!
I should note that I've reset PRAM; almost cruelly, the fans went mad as soon as the computer started up (5000rpm on entering the desktop).
Edit: It looks, to me, like the data cable I disconnected is also a temperature sensor... or at least links to a temperature sensor on the superdrive? With that in mind... maybe the computer thinks it's missing temperature data, and overcompensating with the fans?
Edit 2: I reopened the case, attached the keyboard lighting cable (oops) so that works. I also reconnected the superdrive, and am nothing short of ecstatic to say that the fans are back to normal. The annoying superdrive noise is very much livable-with, compared to the fans.
I'd imagine there's nothing I can do to get the best of both worlds here, though I'm open to suggestions! Perhaps this thread could serve to forewarn somebody; I assumed that as the superdrive was replaceable, it was also removable. It appears you need some sort of temperature sensor in its place, however.
