Hey All,
I've got a question and a suggestion:
Question
I'm looking to get a rMBP to use with Houdini for vfx work. I was wondering if anyone had used, (ideally) a retina macbookpro or a regular 2012 macbookpro with Houdini?
The main reason I'm asking is that H12 uses a mixture of OpenGL 3 and an OpenGL 2 for (3 for the viewports, 2 for much of the UI). Apple, in their infinite wisdom updated to version 3 in Lion and depreciated much of 2 which means that Houdini viewport is running in a strange legacy mode (no AA or OpenCL
). So I'm really wondering whether the GeForce 650 is going to render the viewport reasonably, with ok performance.
Suggestion: Thread for 3D Applications on MacBook Pros
More generally, while I've come across a lot of threads on photoshop/after effects and photography related software, there doesn't seem to be much on the performance of 3D on MacBooks. So was thinking it could be useful to create a thread on how various 3D apps perform. What do y'all reckon? Would this be useful? Does anyone else care?
(Yes I know there's CGTalk, but the discussions there pretty much quickly deteriorate to "buy a PC" and really fail to look at mac performance in any meaningful way. Coincidentally Maya 2013 viewport 2.0 on the rMBP is meant to be really awesome)
