Whats up everyone. I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro's memory from 2GB to 8GB and after installation. I've been getting a lot of kernel panics. I eventually took it to the Apple Store, where the Genius told me that he had kind of fixed the problem but that it might com eback. So he told me to wipe my harddrive because he said that'd prolly be the fix. Well after wiping it and using it for a couple of days. I've gotten two kernel panics already.

I have a 2009 13" Macbook Pro. I am running Lion OS X. 250GB harddrive, 160GB free. 8GB RAM currently.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I have to put the 2GB RAM back in or maybe I didn't put the 8GB RAM in right? Could it be that I just need a new harddrive. I posted the error reports along with a memory test I did through "Memtest OS X".

Here's Memtest

Sounds like one of your RAM sticks is bad or not quite compatible. Did you order 1067 MHz RAM? If you did, send it back and exchange it. If you ordered 1333 MHz RAM, return it and get the 1067 MHz RAM instead.

If it started happening after putting new ram in, I would check that first.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/788590/

Your computer is supposed to use DDR3-1066. Not sure, but I don't think it would even boot if you put something faster in.

Just got another one :( (See bottom for the third report). And also I did that test you linked me to. Except it got interrupted in the middle by a kernel panic. Here's the report of whatever it got done.

I would say it's obvious your ram is bad. Are you sure the MBP will accept 8 gb ram?

Have you tried putting the old ram back in?

Putting the 2GB ram in tonight (which kind of sucks since my Macbook's going to be slow as hell). And yeah I'm sure it accepts 8GB...i mean its running now with it smoothly.

This is the memory I purchased. CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Memory for Apple Model CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7

Sounds like you just got a bad stick. That can happen. Exchange it with Newegg - you should be fine.

Ok, so I only WISH I knew more about all this, but here goes:

This morning I googled a specific piece of the Apple error report and found this thread. Here's what I googled:

Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 11.1.0: Tue Jul 26 16:07:11 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1699.22.81~1/RELEASE_X86_64

I had several of these fatal errors last Sunday night. Finally a safe-mode boot exited the loop. I'd had a few others seemingly randomly in the weeks prior.

I'm on a late-2011 15" MPB, 2.2 GHz, 4GB upgraded to 8GB with the correct Crucial upgrade sticks. (No good reason to pay Apple to do what I can easily do myself for a third of the price, right?)

HOWEVER, I'd had this problem PRIOR to installing the memory upgrade. In addition, from the arrival of the machine, I've had an issue with 'kernel_task' being the top hit in my Activity Monitor's real memory column, currently eating up 678 MB. It's caused (me thinks) the fans to hang out at 6200 rpm way too often. I've been on with Apple Care since Monday morning. We just finished wiping the machine, reinstalling Lion, migrating only documents, no apps, from Time Machine backup, and kernel_task is still there doing it's thing.

Oddly though, it only shows up in one of my user accounts! The other two accounts I have, (one created by the Apple rep) don't list the kernel_task in the Activity Monitor.

ANY IDEAS?? I'm pretty fatigued of this issue, and no one, not even in forums I've looked at, seems to know definitively.

PLEASE HELP! I'm freakin out!

This part doesn't really mean a whole lot. It's just the kernel version you're using. Lion 7.2 has a newer kernel (11.2.0). It probably won't help, but you could try updating to the latest. (Your kernel indicates you're on Lion 7.1.)

Edit: I just noticed the date in the error. So perhaps you've already upgraded, and this is just an old crash report...

I've had an issue with 'kernel_task' being the top hit in my Activity Monitor's real memory column, currently eating up 678 MB. It's caused (me thinks) the fans to hang out at 6200 rpm way too often. kernel_task is basically the core of the OS. The RAM usage you're seeing is normal, if not a little low. The kernel_task will reserve, I don't know, about 1/10th - 1/8th of your total RAM. When I had 4gb, it used ~600mb; since I've installed 8gb of RAM, it uses 900mb-1gb. Have you checked your system info to verify all of your RAM is being seen?

Edit: Fans don't speed up because of RAM usage. They speed up because CPU usage, which generates heat. If your fans are working overtime, sort activity monitor by CPU use. (Well I guess it's more accurate to say fans speed up because of heat. But RAM use alone won't generate heat, and therefore won't effect your fans' speed. It's usually your CPU.)

Oddly though, it only shows up in one of my user accounts! The other two accounts I have, (one created by the Apple rep) don't list the kernel_task in the Activity Monitor.

I think this is impossible. Make sure your activity monitor is set to show all processes.

Anyway, if you've been having this problem since you took the computer out of the box, I'd say it's a hardware issue. To be sure: Put the original RAM back in. Format, re-install the OS. Don't import anything. Just start totally fresh. If it still crashes, take it to Apple.

Indeed. Good call. This is an older report. I'm currently 7.2.

I've heard this from some, but the Genius Bar fella told me he'd never seen it and it wasn't in any of theirs. Makes sense though... And yes, the system recognizes all 8 GB of RAM.

Understood. Here's what's strange. After making a 50 GB partition with a fresh install of 7.2 as a test profile, I played three large YouTube vids simultaneously in it and the fans didn't whir above 3K. I ran the gauntlet with that acct and the fans never jumped up. But reverting back to my main user profile this morning, fans were maxed at 62K within 10 sec of playing a small 360p vid. CPU was at 90ºC within a couple mins. What gives!? If it's a hardware issue, why so inconsistent?

I think this is impossible. Make sure your activity monitor is set to show all processes.

Great catch, I had selected the wrong sort criteria. Going back to look, kernel_task is in all users accts.

Anyway, if you've been having this problem since you took the computer out of the box, I'd say it's a hardware issue. To be sure: Put the original RAM back in. Format, re-install the OS. Don't import anything. Just start totally fresh. If it still crashes, take it to Apple.

Well, i can't say for sure that it was there from the box. A lot happened in the first month I owned it, including upgrading to Lion, and I wasn't looking for the problem at that time. My friend has a 2010 MBP and verified the kernel_task as normal. It's my first booklet, I've always been a tower guy, so I didn't know what to expect. So far I'm less than thrilled. But your advise is better than that from what I've received from 3+ Apple techs. Thanks for your time.

So what's to say it's not some widget or other rogue software causing the fans to crank up? I'll try the clean install and see. I've seen other heat/fan issues with this model in forums. I'm about ready to request a new machine. I need this thing to work as I run my business off of it. Too much time wasted already...

I can't believe a guy in an Apple store didn't know what kernel_task is. That's pretty bad!

I wouldn't immediately assume the heating-up/fans and kernel panics are related, though maybe you do have something running that's causing lots of problems. It's interesting that an clean install in another partition works well. Perhaps something Bad got imported after you re-installed.

The best way to figure out what's causing the heat-up is to open Activity Monitor, show all processes, and sort by % CPU. Probably something will be at the top using a significant chunk.

I recently updated my late-2011 15" 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro with 8GB CORSAIR RAM too, (though I got the 1333Mhz DDR3 ones) and I'm also getting the errors OP posted in memtest!

So far these are the only errors I've got so far (I got nothing outside the testing app so far thank god), but apparently CORSAIR isn't the best choice for these late-2011 MBPs, or what?

I've already ordered a pair of CRUCIAL RAM instead, and will be getting a refund for my Corsair RAM....
