i stupidly knocked my 15" macbook pro off the table last night and to start with it would not work at all but now it wil go on to the desk top eventually after lots of thinking , but wont do much after that , so still kinda work but need to get it up to full speed again any ideas would be greatly appretiated

Get into OS X and open disk utility then verify disk; can be found in applications/utilities/disk utility. To do actual repairs you do need the OS X disc though (that's assuming the damage wasn't physical; if it is you'll need a new drive).
 
agreed with the person on top, it's more than likely your drive.. the needle could reset itself in a disk repair utility or you might just need another hard drive. Luckily it isn't anything else because then it'd more than likely not start up at all. I'd say try to repair the current HDD because if you got it as far as working slow from not working it might fix itself
