Hey everyone,

I'm looking at a new in box Macbook Pro, 2.4ghz, 4GB, 256MB video w/ AppleCare (not registered yet) . This laptop was originally purchased in December but never opened. The warranty says it expires November '08. It IS a second hand laptop with no receipt (seller said he purchased from an individual).

I have serial number and have looked it up on Apple website. This seller is not local to me so I've had to work through these items via email. He also sent me pictures of box with serial number on it.

1) Is this a safe purchase?
2) Is this a fair deal? I figure with updates around the corner, this price is still decent.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

For that price or a little more you'd probably be able to grab a refurb direct from Apple, upgrade the RAM yourself, and get AppleCare on eBay.

I can tell you what I think

I think $2350 is a little too much. I think you can get the same config macbook pro for less.

I agree with above. This could even be stolen or who knows where it has come from. Spending this much money you would be much better purchasing from Apple. Check out the Education store on there it will save you a couple hundred of dollars.

So let me ask, where exactly are you guys finding these killer deals?

I know I want a MBP w/
*3-yr AppleCare
*15"
*2.4Ghz

The memory I can take care of from OWC, Crucial, etc.

Thanks

$2099 for the 2.4 at the Apple Refurb store.

$2099 for the 2.4 at the Apple Refurb store.

That's right.

Then add:
~$200-250 for AppleCare from eBay, a good deal on Amazon, etc.
~$80-100 for 4GB of RAM (there have been great deals lately, so this could be less)
Total (max values): $2450 shipped.

That's only $100 more than the unit you're considering. Then realize that:
-you've upped the RAM from 2GB to 4GB
-you're dealing directly with Apple (receipt)
-there's a guaranteed 1 yr warranty (so you don't even have to buy the AppleCare right away)
-there's none of the worries of purchasing from a stranger (whether online or in person)

New v/s Refurb?

I like New rather than getting refurbs. Brand new MBP is definitely better than a used one. You can definitely add applecare for $249 or so. Please remember that you can find a better deal rather than paying $2350.
