Macbook Pro Graphics Card

I know that there was a problem with the graphics card on the Macbook Pros so if I buy one before its update will it still fail on me? I want to buy it before the update to take advantage of the free ipod deal. and do any Mechanical Engineering majors have any experience with the MBP and running ProE and Autodesk Inventor?
