I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro that has been working fine, until a few days ago. I tried to run a system update, that includes the following updates:

iPhoto Update 9.2.1
HP Printer Software Update 2.8
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update 2.3

I runs the update installs the updates and then hangs when it get sot "Moving Items into Place..". It just sits there, and does nothing. I then have to force quit the installer, and restart the machine, at this point it reboots as normal, but rolls it back to before the updates were installed. If I try to update again, same thing happens.

One thing that I have noticed since attempting this install, is that my iPhoto no longer works. WHen I try to launch it, it tells me this"iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem."

I do have my iPhoto Library on an external drive. BUt the drive was plugged in during the updates.

Can anyone help me to get my machine updateable again. Please help!

Thanks SpazzyMac, I am going to try that right now. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks!!!

The funny thing is: that I fixed it after I saw this thread :p
iPhoto failed on me the day the update went online
apple should have been faster, but it is fine by me
after all, we had a bunch of new software updates for OS X and iOS this month :D

Updating my MacBook Pro

Hi all,

It seems i have the same kind of problem... It said it had 4 updates, iphoto, aperture, canon printer drivers and Firmware update. After it rebooted it gets the gray screen and there it is already now for 45 minutes.... I looked on the apple site and they say " don't shutdown the computer".... I have no idea what to do now.. Cause i don't know which update it is executing now... I do hear sometimes hard disk activity but i do not see the progress bar or something like that.

Hope someone has a good advice... My MacBook Pro is from March 2011.

Regards,
JW

Did it freeze on the grey screen when it shut down, or is it the grey screen that happens when you boot back up? Mine froze when I tried to shut down after the updates failed. It froze as it was trying to shut down and had the spinning loading symbol, that just kept spinning endlessly. I ended up forcing it down, and then powered it back up, and the system automatically reverted back to the state it was in before the update.

Not sure if that helps, but that is what happened to me.
