Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend fix his (approx) 2011/2012 non-retina MacBook Pro. When he boots, it shows a circle with a slash through it, and will only boot fully 40% of the time.

I thought to try reformatting the hard drive and doing a clean install of OS X, but I was unable to wipe the hard drive through disk utility (from USB installer of mavericks).

Would it be safe to assume the problem lies with the hard drive and buying a new one would restore function, or can the problem lie elsewhere?

Thanks,

Dave

Most likely, the hard drive is dead. Time for a new one!

Sounds like a hardware problem with the drive. A new one should take care of it.
