I have a 15" MBP 2.2 GHz, w/ 2GB RAM (original 2007). The Hard Drive crashed and Apple Genius guy said it was completely dead. (I have all Apps & Data backed up on an external Fantome Drive). Instead of having Apple store replace the bad HD, I bought a Western Digital 2.5" 320GB, Scorpio Black 7200rpm SATA 9.5mm Notebook HD. After physically replacing the HD, I tried booting up from an external USB-connected DVD drive with my original OSX install disc #1 inside (the MBP's internal SuperDrive is non-functioning.) I pressed "C" while turning on the MBP power, got the pretty-sounding musical chord, but then nothing else but a gray screen. Been waiting a long time for something to happen. A lot of whirring, but no displays. Anyone got a clue? Much thanks!

You need to get the Super Drive working. It won't boot from the USB Drive.

I had the same exact problem trying to install Boot Camp when I had done the OptiBay.
