MacBook Pro Hard Drive says to Initialize

Hi i have a MacBook Pro with a Western Digital 500gb Hard drive. I had it replaced since it was going bad and have a new 1tb HD and OS X up and running. Problem is now i need to get the old data off.
I have tried to connect it Via Firewire, USB, and when i do it waits for about a min and says error we need to initialize the drive. If i do will all my data be gone?
I have tried Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, both dont even see the drive.
What can i do to recover the Data?

Use a data recovery program. Data Rescue III is somewhat popular.
